Musée d’Orsay Brings Caillebotte’s Paintings to Embrace Male’s Beauty

Gustave Caillebotte, known to paint masculinity with precision and elegance, receives an exquisite exhibition at Musée d’Orsay in remembrance of his 130th death anniversary and to reproduce the opening of Caillebotte’s Gallery in 1897.

Caillebotte Painting Men Exhibition Musee d'Orsay

The ideal masculinity in art has always delineated itself with a few traits like versatile flexed muscles, especially the abdomen area and buttocks, sharp facial features, impeccable grooming, and prideful postures. From David, Doryphoros (Spear Bearer), The Farnese Hercules to Bouguereau’s dark paintings, the male figures have always been a center of attraction due to their highly toned bodies of lower fat percentage. However, it was Gustave Caillebotte who not only painted masculinity in original forms, doing their daily activities like bathing, sitting, reading, or sometimes just standing, but also adored their charm with imperfect (yet handsome) bodies and figures. To witness this spectacular and relatable beauty, Musee d’Orsay presents an immense exhibition of Gustave Caillebotte on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the artist’s death from October 8, 2024, to January 19, 2025.

The exhibition is a project, which was inspired by the recent acquisition of two of Caillebotte’s significant works by the J.Paul Getty Museum (Young Man at His Window) and the Musée d’Orsay (A Boating Party) and centers around a masterpiece from this artist, Paris Street; Rainy Day, on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago. Furthermore, this event is a time capsule of the artist’s excellent creativity on the occasion of his 130th death anniversary, which is also a dare when this outstanding collection of paintings was bequeathed to the French government.

Gustave Caillebotte produced some of the most expressive forms of artwork, which shows his picking of subjects from his surroundings, Haussmann’s Paris, or the country houses around the capital. He included subjects ranging from his male acquaintances like his brothers, workers employed by his family, or his boating friends to himself. As a response to the realist movement, he introduced new figures like an urban worker, a man on a balcony, a sportsman, and even an intimate portrait of a male nude at his ‘toilette.’ In an era where traditional masculinity always shaped perfect bodies, he portrayed powerful images of men that challenged the established order of sociality and sexuality.

One of his most famous and celebrated paintings, A Boating Party or Part of a Boat or Boater with a Top Hat which was painted by the artist between 1877 and 1878 is in the limelight of the exhibition along with Young Man at His Window. The former artwork remains important for the Impressionist movement as it was classified as a National Treasure in 2020 by the Ministry of Culture of France.

As a celebration of the occasion, the entire endowment of the artist will also be on show in a temporary exhibition, reproducing the 1897 opening of the “Caillebotte Gallery” at the Musée du Luxembourg. This same exhibition will be on display at the J. Paul Museum, Los Angeles, from February 25 to May 25, 2025, and at the Art Institute of Chicago from June 22 to October 5, 2025.

Presenting 70 pieces of Caillebotte’s paintings, pastels, sketches, photographs, and documents, this long series of exhibitions will begin with a major retrospective in 1994-1995 (Paris, Chicago) to allow the public to reconnect with the masterpieces of Gustave Caillebotte. More importantly, this will shed light on the three periods of Gustave’s career- the Yerres period, the connection between his paintings and photography, and his passion for garden design, amongst others.

An exhibition dedicated to a man’s beauty encompasses an exceptional form of creativity, which can’t be missed at all.
