New and Original Casa Batlló, Restoration of Gaudí’s Building Reveals Its True Face

Dating back to 2018, the restoration of Casa Batlló comes to an end, exhibiting what for so long was missing.

The grand identity of Antoni Gaudí and the resulting marvels of architecture are not confined to Barcelona or perhaps Europe. His buildings not only reflect a nature he so modestly adored, but they are also a study for architects who evolve with time while having a better understanding of the past. Preserving this legacy is, however, not the work of an individual but several teams, such as the Casa Batlló Team, one that has done an applauding job at restoring its significant elements- the rear façade and private courtyard of the Noble Floor.

Restored to its true design and similar to what was conceived by Gaudí, the project is one of the most significant of this and the preceding decade as it is the first time after the restoration of the 1950s and 1990s that the spaces are now fully restored.

Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Casa Batlló’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the project reimagines its original look before the alterations since 1915. This brings back the original colors, planters, and the pergola of the courtyard. Further, a large investment of €3.5 million was put in to hire restorers and artisans to work on various elements of the façade- ceramics, glass, wrought iron, wood, and stucco. Gary Gautier, CEO of Casa Batlló, said,

“It is a privilege to experience this historic moment, to continue unveiling Gaudí’s genius for future generations, and to do so by highlighting the mastery of artisan knowledge. It’s a gift for Barcelona and for the world.”

In addition to the elaborate wonders for replicating the originality and adding the missing fragments of Gaudí original design, the lead architect of the restoration, Xavier Villanueva, explained how they relied on modern techniques and discovered almost the contrasting look of the buildings. He said,

“When we discovered the original colors, we couldn’t believe it. The current façade is like the photographic negative of the previous one.”

He added,

“The discoveries we’ve made relate to shapes, colors, and materials with the rest of Casa Batlló. As we restored, we reached the essence of Gaudí, and the whole house gained harmony,”

Casa Batlló is a product of Emili Sala Cortés and Antoni Gaudí- originally constructed by the former in 1877, it was only in 1904 that the latter worked on an extensive restoration of the building. The architect transformed the façade, worked on interior partitioning, expanded the light wall, and through his understanding of variety, redefined the interiors. Critics believe the building exceeds its time and is a true specimen, perhaps a precursor to the architectural avant-gardes of the late 20th century.
