The Capella de les Arts of the Ave Maria Foundation in Sitges presents the exhibition of the Spanish artist Agustí Ferrer i Pino until August 4. The exhibition, Discovering the Paintings of the Vinyet, aspires to bring together twenty works of the artist Pino, who worked between 1918-19 on the decoration of the cambric of the Vinyet sanctuary.
Curated by Toni Sangrà, author of Ferrer Pino’s thesis, and art historian Beli Artigas, the exhibition remarks the stylistic connections between the Vinyet murals. Further, it seeks to display a few works from the private collection alongside the tapestry of the Virgin of the Vinyet that was recovered in 2022 for restoration. The event marks an important part of Spanish culture as it not only introduces the works of the lesser-known artist Ferrer Pino but gives an overview of European and Algerian culture of the 1900s through remarkable compositions.
Agustí Ferrer i Pino was trained at the La Lonja School of Fine Arts, and he was increasingly known among the artist circles of Barcelona. He traveled to several countries, including Europe and Algeria, to take an overview of their art. When he returned to the Sitges after long trips abroad, he painted several commissions. Among the works from his life, some of the most prominent ones are those in the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista, the camber of El Vinyet (1919), the chapel of La Trinitat (1929), the Casino Prado building facades (1918) and the main room in the Casino Prado (1921).
Through the exhibition Discovering the Paintings of the Vinyet, the beholder will see the symbolist and orientalist artistic personality of the painter, who made several trips to Europe but ultimately returned to Sitges in 1915, from where he finally settled. If you happen to be visiting Sitges at the moment, this is a good chance for you to learn about the city by its most creative intellect of the 1900s.
