When I saw Peter McKinnon’s new studio, I was totally blown away by the combination of colors, contrasts, and accessories that gave it a fascinating designer look. From walls to furnishings and accessories, everything looks perfect, as if every corner is well woven in terms of design and art. Now, decorating and designing a place can be a really daunting and overbearing process. It is not because it asks for numerous efforts, but it needs perfect planning to execute the decor in such a way that you don’t overdo or undermine the place through its elements. Coming to McKinnon’s studio, I loved the illusion of brick walls, which give a temporary look of freshness and rawness. It’s not like I haven’t seen it before as the 3D panel walls are worth the hype, which I have even tried. However, I have seen numerous shorts or reels in which most of the internet is pairing them with the wrong things, compromising the individuality of these panels. Hence, I have decided to write this article, where I am telling you how to get an extra-ordinary look through it with the bare minimum effort. So, let’s start.
What Are 3D Panel Walls?
Before we try to achieve a look through the 3D panel walls, let me tell you a little about them. You might have seen three-dimensional or textured walls everywhere on the internet. These are nothing but wall decorative materials that bring uniqueness to your space in a creative way, commonly known as 3-D wall panels. These are made with several different materials, most of them including plastic, plaster, tin, aluminum, and wood/MDF.
As beautiful as they look, they come in different styles and shapes, which can be easily adhered to your walls through a strong wall adhesive. Whether you want to stimulate stones or bricks, wood grains, or shabby chic tins, you can use these wall panels to achieve an artistic atmosphere on the wall.
Some of the materials used for 3D panel walls are MDF (medium-density fiberboard), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer), etc., but they all differ in their properties. For instance, MDF is stronger, but PVC is waterproof. So, before choosing a wall panel, first check for the quality you need most. For instance, in the case of the bathrooms, you can use PVC ones.
When it comes to the installation of these panels, you won’t find any difficulty as all you need to do is simply paste, fix, or hang. The only thing you have to make sure is that you align them with accuracy to avoid any improper inclinations. Whether you use it in your kitchens, living rooms, exteriors, or bathrooms, it goes well everywhere.
For maintenance of these panels, you just need a soft damp cloth. Wipe the dust and stains with a damp cloth, and your walls are already shining.
Design Ideas to Decorate With 3D Panel Walls.
I used 3D panel walls to decorate my exteriors and trust me, it looked so much better than before. I used stone-looking tiles with a spotlight against them, fixed at the flooring so that it reflects them well. Further, I used snake plants for an extra demanding look. Now, in this section, I am giving you a few ideas, which you can use to decorate your space in an illusionist way.
1. A Rock Finished Bedroom.
A bedroom is a sanctuary, which is why I always feel that it must be given a tranquil atmosphere as a priority. While the Japanese already perfected doing so, they particularly preferred natural materials to invoke calmness, and the best way to do so is by using rock or stone finish walls. Now, I have already written a separate article on feng-shui tips and making your bedroom more comfortable, which you can refer to.
However, it is not possible to rebuild the interiors as it’s a mess, and that’s when you can use rock-finished 3D panel walls. Further, you can always add an indirect source of light to exemplify the look of the room and use minimum furnishings to keep it balanced.

2. Using Scraped Tin to Create a Corner Which Stands Out From the Rest of Your Apartment.
Just using beige and neutral shades as the palette of your home interiors is not gonna help you to create a difference. It is because these shades might look good, but they don’t reflect your personality, whereas a home with each corner decorated like none other is a depiction of your interests and personal choices. Hence, to stand apart, you can try making a shabby chic corner with a good antique table, a few candles in your old whiskey jars, and a quality 3D panel wall resembling the texture of stained tin.

3. The Usual Brick Walls but With a Twist.
The most common 3D panel walls are the brick ones, and of course, many people love them. However, I would ask you to choose them with a different texture. You can always go for the red brick 3D wall panels, but to stand out from the rest, you can choose which has a whitish or concrete texture, that looks more genuine. Now, there are hundreds of options for these, but the good-quality ones look more genuine, which is why I am recommending The Decorative Ceiling Tiles store, which has every single kind of these panels and is just incredible with their quality.
Now, you can always choose to add an item of accent furniture like a black or leather brown sofa with a statement coffee table for a better look. Please understand that it is necessary to add a contrast through a strong statement otherwise these illusion-giving panels are of no use.
In summary, try getting a vintage look.

4. Combining Two Textures as if They Were One.
Sometimes, only a single design can look too overwhelming, so you can always add two kinds of textures to give a subtle look. For instance, you can use the red-bricked 3D wall panels at the top and then white or textured ones at the bottom from mid of the wall. I am attaching a picture so that you understand what I am trying to say.
You can create more patterns by combination, but make sure, you give it an intensified look in this case. For instance, you can have your telescope or the expensive vintage camera placed in its corner to give a better look.

5. Opting Texture for Scandinavian Interiors.
Now, Scandinavian interiors demand the most texture and neutral or gray tones with proper planning so that your space is comfortable but spacious at the same time. To fill the spaciousness, you can use 3d wall panels, which will give a texture and enhance the beauty of your open space. Add modular furnishings, sculptures, and beautiful rugs to complete the look.
I have written a detailed guide on Scandinavian decor, which you can refer to, and then plan to change a bit of your interiors accordingly.

6. Getting an Abstract Designed Wall.
One of the most underrated ways to use 3D wall panels is by getting to use it as an artwork. You can use a variety of styles to form an artwork with them. Either, you can go for a particular texture or color to form an artwork through them. You can always fix hidden lights along the edges of these 3d panel walls as you fit them onto your walls for a more elongated look.
In this image, the interior designers added a contrasting L-shaped couch with a good window treatment to further fill the space of the corner.

7. Getting a Mid-Century Modern Look Through Wooden Panels.
I feel that wood panels make everything subtle and comfortable. Hence the cabin houses look so adorable. However, maintaining wood panels requires a lot of care and maintenance, which is why it is not a viable option. Hence, to achieve a similar look and vibe, you can use 3d wall panels for wooden designs.
You can always use plants to add more peace to your space. I have written a guide on living room plants that you can refer to for further help regarding this.

8. Adding an Unconventional Clean Look.
A cleaner look is much appreciated when one of the elements of the interior design is heightened, but at the same time, balanced by the furnishings and lighting. If you want to achieve a clean look with the bare minimum furnishings, however, exaggerating the luxury and modernism, then you should go for textured PVC 3D panel walls. Also, remember that to achieve this look, you have to carefully use your furnishing so that you don’t overdo it, taking away the limelight of these panels.

9. Creating a Bookshelf Out of Texture.
Being expressive in the interiors is a good way to give a subtle and differentiated look. 3D panel walls are a great way to be expressive, as well as create an illusion that works well on the mind. This idea is for those people who don’t fear to experiment and are obsessed with shelf decoration. Earlier, I wrote a wall decor guide, where I told you the basics of arranging the decorative items over the wall like a pro. So, you can refer to the article to help you with this step.
All you need is wall panels, which show rectangular slabs as if some of them are coming out of the wall. Then, get your shelves of the same color fixed over it, and you have a perfectly different corner or wall.

10. Let Your Pillar Be the Judge.
You don’t need to fill the entire place with the 3d wall panels, instead, you can just hold onto one pillar to stand apart. You can take a boring pillar or corner of your space and then use rustic look 3D panel walls and add a vintage bicycle or just a lampshade over it to give an extraordinary look.

Final Words.
Well, I have managed to tell you a bit about 3D panel walls through this article but there are a lot more possibilities to decorate your space like an expert. I hope you found this article helpful. My only suggestion is to not overdo things while you are going with these panels as they attract a lot of your attention. Meanwhile, if there is anything you wish to ask, you can ping me in the comments. Lastly, if you are wondering, here is the tour of Peter McKinnon’s studio.
