80s Interior Design: About the Decor Style, Steps & Ideas

80s interior design is a well suited option for owners who want the colorful retro look with comfort. As it makes the comeback, we curated this guide to plan your interiors.

80s interior design

Amidst the nostalgic rainy season, when I heard my grandparent’s stories of moving into their first homes and decorating them, the first thing I could think of was the gleaming pop colors and the beauty of consumerism and materialism. Yes, the 80s interior design is back and is on fire. Before getting them into our rooms, let me ask you one thing, do you know the vogue of the 80s culture? If you don’t, I will introduce those to you briefly. It was the time of saxophone and trumpets when people waved their bodies on the Euro disco tracks with their lacy, bold, and colorful patterned dresses, swinging their bouncy teased hair on them. That was the same time Billboards burst due to Michael Jackson’s songs, and all those old lovers had the same music on their record players. If this enthralled you already, then wait for the exciting part, which is yet to come. I have a bigger surprise for you than a sneak peek into their lifestyle. Can you guess what it is, or should I proceed for that Aww moment? I am presenting you the ultimate guide to 80s bedroom and interior design by which you can experience and fill the gap of time travel.

By the end of this guide, you will have a comprehensive knowledge of 80s interior design, the characteristics of this decor style, and an in-depth idea of decorating your interiors as well as you will set your eyes on some of the most elaborate ideas. So let’s start without further ado.

80s Interior Design: A Brief Introduction.

Before we start with the step guide for 80s decor, let me first tell you a bit about it. Having sourced from different influences like punk, high-tech, low-tech, post-modernism, minimalism, and deconstructivism, the 80s home interiors share a common feature with them and that is irrationality and almost bizarreness as they were wilfully extreme. If you take a viewpoint of 1980s design, with a psychological perspective, then you will see that it has signs of juvenile rebellion. There are distinguishing features which include a rejection of ossified structures, muscular vitality, extreme mood swings, a delight to shock the people, and self-infatuation.

You must understand that design was always a crucial part of the 80s as it was the first time after the 1920s that people literally adored the expression of interiors. Enjoying was the most significant principle of the 80s decor, which previous decades lacked. In the 1980s design, you see that there was a lack of rational solutions and they used functionalism with a twist that was not boring. There is an extremeness in the design as if the people really want to catch attention faster but at the same time, there might be an emotion behind the interiors. Let me tell you this fact in a little detail as it is the sole basis for designing 80s interiors.

What Is So Iconic About the 80s?

In the 1980s, design continuously held a track between two opposing poles- between protest and passive conformity or between provocation and decoration. For instance, when Memphis gave a way to reassure a neo-conservative and most-modernist approach to the 1980s home interiors, the minimalism meager was unpretentiously opposed by it. Hence, there are infinite opposites to the design of the 1980s. Like, in a similar place, there can be high-tech and modernism, cultivated elegance and brutality, abstraction and representationalism, or coolness and logic. What I am trying to say here is that two utterly contrasting elements were blended together to form the 80s interiors.

When Did the 80s End?

One of the drawbacks of 80s interior design is that though they included a spectrum of colors with a tendency to express, there were no particular things to bind these interiors, instead the consumer let his foot in every direction, leaving behind no avant-garde. But the decade was colorful, creative, and productive when it came to functionality.

However, sooner the objects used in these interiors were treated as art and there was an intensified change of behavior among people as if independent of the utilitarian value, the design was only a non-communication to the people, allowing more judgments. The furniture brought from that time remained to create an impact instead of buying it for the consumer’s wish. To a certain extent, people admitted things but then a phase came when they realized that the interiors of their homes represented the lifestyles of others and not them. And in some extreme cases, it reached an extent that people used to surround themselves with completely alienated furniture, living in a simulated reality. Further, there was an ‘aristocratization’ (more expensive objects for a new elite), which needed to be reversed and that’s when 80s decor ended.

In this article, we are not completely surrendering ourselves to mere objects, instead, we will take inspiration from the 80s interior design to fill our space with creativity and passion. Further, we will fill the space with the furnishing our personality reflects.

Characteristics of 80s Interior Design.

The characteristics of 80s interior design are as follows:

1. The Furniture Added a Bold Statement to the Interiors.

A particular area of 80s decor has at least a few pieces of furniture that emerged from the background to dominate the scene as if they dominate the area. Some of the iconic 80s furniture pieces were Ettore Sottsass’ Carlton Shelves, Toshiyuki Kita’s Wink Armchair, and Hand Hollein’s Marilyn Sofa. It is not necessary that this same furniture would be repeated but try to resemble the tastes of the 80s interior design. A quick tip is to look for stores that have vintage pieces that are designed in a certain characteristic way and not to only overdo things.

2. Had Theatrical Interiors Through Low-Intensity Light.

The 1980s was the decade of theatrical lights. And because of these lights, one space had much more utility than a single ordinary corner. These lights were handled in such a way that they had the capability to showcase an extensive interior design through a more dramatic appeal. Some of the common lighting options from this time apart from conventional sources were Low-voltage Halogen lamps, Neon lights, and Neon tubing. Remember the key is to keep the dim lights on and create an interior resembling that of Rembrandt paintings, commonly known as Rembrandt lighting. Hence, there are diffusers, spotlights, and an interplay of artificial light through masks and colored glasses.

3. Contained Highly Contrasting Tablewares.

The 80s decor portrayed the supremacy of Italian craftsmanship for tableware. The dominant factor in this tableware remained the personality of the designer with an aesthetic fashion trend. The previous decades didn’t include the spirit of decorating tableware but the 1980s brought a new delight in decoration with post-modernism but with conspicuous consumerism. The teapots by Frank Lloyd Wright and Lino Sabattini Cutlery and decorated ceramic by Nathalie du Pasquier were famous during this time. The 1980s included silver or gold-colored tea kettles and cups, highly colored and enameled contrasting dishwares, steel tea or coffee piazza, etc.

4. Used Minimalist or Bright Patterned Textiles.

With the high contrast of other elements, the textiles of the 1980s were peaceful. Unlike the previous decades, textiles were used to fill up the space while balancing the furnishing. The textiles were used as wall hangings, rugs, and table cloths, and they could have been of minimalist or bright patterned nature. Lastly, Ralph Lauren of the 80s tells you exactly the kind of textiles that 80s home interiors adore.

So far, I told you the easiest characteristics to judge whether a place has 80s interior design or not. Further, you can refer to 80s Style: Designs of the Decade by Albrecht Bangert to know more about it. Now, that we have built a solid foundation for this interior style, it is time that we move to our step-guide.

How to Make Your Room Look 80s?

1. Use All Those Symmetric-Asymmetric Shapes.

Shapes are not just visual articulation to our eyes, but also a part of dramatic energy. If you have seen the rectangles in logos, it might make you wonder about them. Not only do they contributes to the design, they also create stability and comfort, likewise, circles have their importance, displaying earthbound. Triangles follow masculine power, religion, strength, or conflict. Based on your personality, it is easy to pick a shape or the kind of aroma you want in your surroundings. Once you have done that, it is time to collect colorful alternatives for it, like red, green, pink, blue, and even white.

Next, find a corner on the wall with the least space and where natural light can reflect those shapes. In case, you don’t have natural light in your room, don’t worry. I will make sure that your shapes still dazzle with the gleaming luminosity. You can also refer to my detailed guide on how to brighten a dark room.

Carrying on, if you want to stick an abstract pattern on your wall, pick all the shapes and try to pour your creativity into it through your intellect. If you still find yourself helpless, stick to this step. All you need to do is, take a pencil and draw a shape you want to fill. It will be easier if you want your entire wall filled with shapes. Stick your colorful patterns on the slightly cornered wall of your 80s room, and the first step is complete.

2. Don’t Go Without a Mirror.

Remember 80s interior design is incomplete without an enormous decorative mirror. Why? Because mirrors reflect positive energy and are responsible for the spaciousness in your 80s room. Also, if you think about how you must choose one for those vintage vibes, don’t think, read.

Pick a rectangular, oval, or square mirror with a golden boundary. Now, emphasize the golden accent because it is the only thing that is pivotal.

Putting the mirror in the right place is the next step once you’ve selected the right mirror. Either, you can use it as a dressing table paired with a vintage chair, or you can hang it on your most prominent wall for a vintage feel in your room. The idea to place the mirror on your previously designed (in the first step) shaped corner is also not bad. It all depends on your taste and creativity for your 80s decor.

3. Marble Furniture and Upholsteries Are a Big Yes!

If you are wondering about marble furnishings, then you have to know that they bring some boldness to your space. Hence, you can not compromise with this step. You can have black and white marble or some peach-white combinations. Choose a marble color that your room lacks or has a faint vision of. Once you have fixed the color, find the purpose of its serving. Either, use it as a table platform for quick conversations, a platform for keeping antiques, or even an end table. The core of this step is to bring playfulness or boldness to your 80s room.

Now comes the upholstery that is nothing but comfortable padding for sitting. I love the leather upholsteries of bright colors that are stain-proof and comfortable. The padding can be used in lounge chairs or the reading corner before classes, or you can extend it to your bed. Remember to be wise with colors. Do not use simple colors but use some floral prints, bold orange, playful yellow, and even suicidal red works. The essence of vintage or 80s interior design is you have to look expensive. Not ridiculing, it’s true! Use your partner’s wit and let him pick at least one corner by himself. I am sure while redecorating your room, your fun moments will come alive.

4. Bring Those Childhood Toys to Get Distracted.

I take credits as no joke and, therefore, I will take no appreciation (You can still do that secretly) for the inclusion of this point. The other day, I watched Thor Love and Thunder, and we all secretly admire Marvel novels and toys. By the way, the movie was epic, and I will not give any spoilers as I am trying to be good, but you can’t deny the timing. Marvel, the word itself, brought me the idea of throwing in some robots, comic books, and other coloristic elements like rubrx cubes that you can play with both actually and through design. Align them on marble slabs or any other corner and let the game begin in your 80s room.

5. Creepers, Spiders, and Palms Are New Buddies.

Creepers, Spiders, and Palms not only fill your space with lots of perfect reflections of natural light but also with positive energy. Pick your favorite interior plant, especially the one that extends its branches long, and then use them as decorating agents near your balcony or windows. On a special note, make sure, your room has sufficient sunlight penetration for the step. 80s interior design includes all those long greeny leafy structures that are by the way oxygen promoters too.

We have a dark bedroom that has fewer lights, so skip this step if yours resemble us. I love creepers so much that I have extended my balcony creepers to my bedroom via the outside windows. You can do this too, but you need to have the nearest distance to your balcony. If none of these things turn out to be effective for you, I have one more option for you. No, not artificial creepers; they look filthy! The creepers will still grow under LED spotlights but at a slower pace and for more help you can find some of the nicest and easiest growing living room plants that will also act as plants for any room. The fact that I could offer so many tips related to this topic might prove to be a blessing for you.

6. Bring Everything for a Noisy Ambiance.

When it comes to 80s interior design, use all those noisy antiques that fill your space rather than leaving a minimalistic touch. Of course, those shiny antique lights, hanging lamps, dark-shade lamps near the bedside, and spotlights are all in. Think of covering every corner with a light, and you will certainly find your perfect match. No Peps, things don’t work this way; I am ridiculing. You have to be specific with your color combinations and what you pick. Two bedside lamps and a few hanging lights work but remember it must be at serving at definitive positions as provided in previous steps for your perfect 80s room. On an important note, do not forget neon lights as they are the soul of the 80s home interiors. In case, neon lights are what you pick for your rooms, here are the best neon signs that you must check as well.

7. Sassy Graphics Can’t Be Left Behind.

Graphics are something that you can’t miss in the pop culture era. Imagine you create doodles or your favorite artist’s graphical picture or even your new NFT (which is not profitable anymore I guess)! Everything comes with a refurbishing technique and so does the 80s interior design. You can use your last bought NFT, put it in a digital frame,, and satisfy yourself with the million-dollar art you bought.

Coming back, yes, those who are wise like me, let us use our conventional graphics and try to bring everything into our bedrooms. I have used a graphical poster of my favorite artist Eminem whom I just wish goodnight before sleeping! (PS. I don’t talk with posters). Of course, you can too, and let me know in the comments what you used.

8. Say Yes to More Prints and Florals in Your 80s Bedroom.

This is something I have been keenly waiting to introduce. When my bedroom is in the worst condition, but I have to still sleep in the same bed, I prefer a floral bedsheet, and trust me, it creates a makeover for a night. Prints and florals are something that lighten up the ambiance and provide you with a scenic vision. The next time you make a blunder in your bedroom, use florals. The best part is that it comes in too many colors that you can’t resist. Not only in beds, but you can use florals in even armchairs or sofas or sometimes wallpapers. It is totally up to you. Even lacy sheer long dense curtains look great in 80s bedroom. Lastly, use this guide to understand how to pick sheets so that your colors do not wear easily.

9. 80s Interior Design Is an Obsession of Glittery Gems.

The last and end game to your 80s interior design are those glittery gems. A model wearing pearl necklaces, those precious fake gems in a basket, and disco balls are all the best recommendations from my side. Once you choose them, arrange them accordingly. For example, if you choose the basket of fake gems, it has to be on your dressing table or those shiny marble slabs. Find more relevant searches based on what you like, even CD players work. Align them, and your 80s room is ready! Go surprise your partner.

Now, so far I told you the basic steps to decorate your home in 80s style. But I still think this is not it. So, to make it extra informative, I am giving you a few examples of different moods so that you can have an inspirational look.

80s Decor Ideas: 7 Looks You Can Attain.

1. Creating a Contemporary Look Through Modernism.

It is not possible to fit your entire home as per the theme of 80s decor because then it might be a little outdated, and we are not doing that. So, to give a modular contemporary look, keeping 80s interior design in mind, you can take this picture for inspiration.

What you can take from here is that for texture, you can use rugs and fabrics. But make sure you use a little bright and contrasting furnishing color to give individuality to the area. Further, don’t forget to add metallic touches, a wicker chair, colorful art, and most importantly, a particularly shaped article like an unusual table (in this case).

For an Easy Look: You have to pair a contrasting and unusual colored or shaped ottoman, a distinctive shaped furnishing, and a good artwork with modern lighting and a lush green plant, and you have your contemporary 80s interior design ready. Use my guide on how to choose art for your home for better results.

2. Settling for an Eclectic Vibe.

The most aesthetic way to twist your interiors, taking inspiration from the 80s is adding an eclectic vibe. For eclectic style 80s decor, you can take combinations of texture, furnishings, colors, and even accessories, but in such a way that they go together. For instance, say you took a beige or off-white ottoman, which you can pair with a decorative side table, an open rack flaunting your book collection with the pieces of art you collected around the world, and a bright-colored armchair or something. You can also take a look at my guide about end table decor and shelf styling if you need more help.

The key is to go at least for four things from the above step guide and then add a few things from eclectic design. You are doing a fusion of these two styles, but the arrangement, color coordination, and planning must be eclectic.

For an Easy Look: First, cover your existing furnishing with better covers so you don’t need to change your entire furniture. Then, add a trendy eclectic side table, a color pop through a furnishing or simple art. Fill the shelves with a good collection, and plants. This way, you can achieve a basic eclectic look. Further, you can always experiment with more colors and textures.

3. Blending Art Deco, Modern, and 80s Decor.

Being artistic while keeping 80s interior design can give you a creative, well-embellished, but cozy place. If you have a small apartment with an open kitchen and space with the most natural lights, then you can try blending art and 80s decor as this project did.

There is the perfect combination of 80s decor colors included in this project through a bright poster, lamps, coffee table, and rug, while the furnishing mostly remains modern.

For an Easy Look: You can use modern furnishings, but combine them with at least one or two statement vintage pieces, which you actually like. Then, you can always create corners of bright color contrasts and then fill the space with contrasting fabrics of different textures. Remember, your place must have a vibe of art deco but at the same time, there must be a smooth contrast of vintage articles so that the theme of 80s home interiors is well maintained.

4. Getting Traditional by Shaker Style 80s Decor.

The Shaker style is one of the most basic and traditional interior designs, which has a homely charm, timelessness, and practicality. Now, originally the Shaker style had Shaker chairs and tables with a look as if it is a village work. There is simplicity and strength in line in this look which gives the most comfort with an utterly homely vibe. So if you are looking for a charming home with simplicity but also need a bit of out-of-the-place corners, then you can go for Shaker-style 80s interiors.

For an Easy Look: Get traditional furnishing but use an 80s color palette and fill up the space with little textiles and tableware. The essence is to have the shaker-style furnishing but the addition of fresh textiles through pillows, drapes, curtains, rugs, and wall hangings in a minimal order will fill the temptation.

5. A Completely Colorful French 80s Decor.

I assure you there is no decor without picking tastes from the Parisians. The picture shows a colorful place with a great arrangement of furnishings and textiles. If you are too tired to see the repetitive patterns of decor, just the same old neutral shades with the same jute textiles and beige sofa, then this is for you.

The designer simply uses colorful rugs with abstract patterns, a good center table to reflect the gorgeous shape, the maroon red sofa, and bright artwork over the wall. There is careful planning and arrangement of these colors, which reflects inventiveness but at the same time, there is a freshness in the entire space.

6. Transforming Through Modernist Midcentury and 80s Interiors.

If you are looking for a truly inventive and designer home, but don’t want to miss the comfort, then you can go for classic modernist midcentury and 80s decor which will include a few signature pieces of artifacts and furnishings but at the same time, it will give the comfort to your place through its mid-century vibe.

This picture shows the use of iconic designer furnishing but at the same time, it is balanced by an artwork and a textured fabric. You can go for a similar look if you long for designer items but you will want to fill the empty space.

For an Easy Look: Pair your already existing furniture with neutral textured fabrics and designer artifacts or purposeful furniture. Further, to fill colors, you can always add contrasting artwork or wall hanging.

7. Getting a Complete Classic Living Area.

If you probably want to stick with the 80s decor but wish to make it cozy, friendly, and playful, then this is for you. You can choose a soft pastel-colored sofa with textured rugs and traditional lamps while displaying your classic crockery set.

For an Easy Look: Go for bold floral prints to cover your sofas. Then add dramatic lighting through lamps or halogen bulbs of low intensity. Try to use little fabrics but comfort it with little coziness.
